PREP INSTRUCTIONSSuprep [Printable version] READ CAREFULLY - Do not take aspirin or aspirin-like products (i.e. Advil, Aleve) for one week prior to your procedure. You may have Tylenol (acetaminophen).
- Do not take iron, iron-containing compounds, vitamin E, or fish oil beginning one week prior to your colonoscopy.
- Please inform us if you are a diabetic so that we can schedule you early in the day.
- Please inform us if you have an allergy to latex products.
- If you take any blood thinning medications (i.e. Coumadin, Plavix, Aggrenox, Pletal, Ticlid, Pradaxa or Trental), you must bring this to the attention of this office.
- Please let us know in advance if you have a history of a prosthetic heart valve, history of endocarditis, vascular graft implantation or prosthetic joints, as a prophylactic antibiotic may be necessary prior to performing a colonoscopy in these situations.
- Please contact this office at least two days prior to your procedure if you need to cancel.
- If we have given you a prescription for blood work, please have this performed 7 - 14 days prior to your procedure unless instructed otherwise by our office.
THE DAY BEFORE THE PROCEDURE - Drink only clear liquids the entire day before your procedure. Solid food, milk, or milk products are not allowed. Clear Liquids include:
- Strained fruit juices without pulp (apple, white grape or lemonade)
- Water
- Clear broth or bouillon, coffee or tea (without milk or non-dairy creamer).
- All of the following as long as they are NOT COLORED RED OR PURPLE
- Gatorade - Snapple
- Carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks
- Kool-Aid (or other fruit flavored drinks)
- Plain Jello (preferably clear or yellow, without added fruits or toppings)
- Ice Popsicles
- Drink at least 8 glasses of water throughout the day and evening.
Directions for taking Suprep Laxative: Beginning at 6PM on the day before your colonoscopy - Pour one of the 6-ounce bottles of Suprep liquid into the mixing container.
- Add cool drinking water to the 16-ounce line on the container and mix.
- Drink ALL the liquid in the container.
- You must drink TWO more 16-ounce containers of water over the next 1 hour (fill the cup 2 more times with plain water and drink).
Beginning at 6 hours before your colonoscopy - Pour the remaining 6-ounce bottle of Suprep liquid into the mixing container.
- Add cool drinking water to the 16-ounce line on the container and mix.
- Drink ALL the liquid in the container.
- You must drink TWO more 16-ounce containers of water over the next 1 hour (fill the cup 2 more times with plain water and drink).
- If your arrival time at the hospital/office is prior to 10:00 AM take the second dose between 10:00 - 11:00 PM the night before.
- If your procedure is being performed in the hospital, call the hospital the day before the procedure after 3:30 PM for arrival time.

ON THE DAY OF YOUR PROCEDURE - Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the day of the procedure, except the second dose of the preparation as described above.
- If your procedure is schedule for the afternoon, you may have clear liquids (as described above) ONLY UP UNTIL 6 HOURS PRIOR TO THE PROCEDURE.
- Have nothing by mouth, including chewing gum or any kind of candy, i.e. mints, tic-tacs, hard candy etc.
- On the day of the procedure take all other necessary medications (blood pressure and cardiac medications) with a sip of water as you normally do.
- Loose fitting clothing should be worn, particularly at the sleeves and waist. Please do not wear contact lenses, eye make-up, or lipstick. It is recommended that you leave all body jewelry home.
- Please bring all medications, including inhalers, with you the day of your procedure.
- In the event your physical condition changes (cold, fever, illness) please contact us prior to coming to the office/hospital for your procedure.
- After your procedure, you will not be released unless there is a driver to take you home.
